Review: The September Issue

Guys, I’ve just watched the best documentary ever created on this planet! Yes, it’s called the September Issue, a real version of the Devil Wears Prada.

Grace Coddington gains many fans from this film.

Grace Coddington gains many fans from this film.

The story is about the work behind the September issue, which is the most important of fashion industry. The first part of the movie tries to show how influential Anna is in this fantasy realm. Then comes Grace Coddington who is like Anna but with artistic view and personality. She has been a scenestealer for like a half of the film. I heard a lot of people discussing how come Anna doesn’t lose her power, especially to Grace, who seems to be nice to everyone. Many of Grace’s works were rejected by La Wintour and the film doesn’t hesitate to accentuate how she felt so sad to see her creative works thrown away. I have an answer: she is too creative. Maybe she should transfer to Vogue Italia if she really wants to do the most artistic works. The good thing about Grace is that she stands up and fight for what she thinks. However, Anna needs some wearable clothes in her magazine and that is what buyers, designers and most people expects to see in this fashion magazine. Anna can combine both art and business into one perfectly.

I really like when I see how designers pay respect to her. Even Stefano Pilati is nervous when he faces with the Pope of fashion! And strangely, no humilated assistants running around and André Leon Talley doesn’t have a leading role this time. BUT he impresses people by his number of Louis Vuitton items he takes to TENNIS COURT. You just have to see it and don’t forget to spot his cute personal trainer as well. And many arguments going on like to retouch or not to retouch are good things to watch!

André Leon Talley

I love Anna even more after watching the film. Her view on how people judges fashion trivial because they are excluded so they mock about the industry. Her siblings seem to get forward very well with serious jobs or in serious publishing houses. I can feel her pressure that hides behind her ice image. She does everything she can do for the perfect piece. She has to be the best in the field in order to be compatable with her brothers and sisters who are amused by what she is doing. And tell you what, it’s not easy in this industry. Talent is nothing without toughness. And in this case, Anna has both.

The film is so real I feel like I’m one of them. Don’t forget this is a documentary not a movie and you’ll learn one or many things from the icon of American fashion, Anna Wintour and her troops at Vogue.

The September Issue hits Bangkok on Thu 12, Nov. first at Paragon Cineplex.
